Every year I pick out one new product to be the unusual outdoors gift of the year so if you keep checking back once a year you will never be without a christmas or birthday gift for that special outdoors person in your life.
This year after much consideration I have decided to name the "TRAILSTOVE" by Stratus (see picture) outdoors gift of the year.
This is an excellent little wood stove that I have had the pleasure to use on my last backpacking trip to the mountains. It is quite cheap ($19.95 + s&h), currently it is only sold online at www.trailstove.com but I checked with the manufacturer who told me they will start selling the Trailstove in a small number of stores soon (but they don't know for sure where and when exactly). No big deal though, I got mine two days after I ordered it, but that probably depends on where in the country you are, (I think these guys are in Georgia).
The Trailstove weighs a little bit less than one pound and is 8 inches tall and 5 inches
in diameter at its widest section.
It is very simple to operate, just put some small
pieces of wood straight from the ground in it, ignite from below, and wait a
couple of minutes for the fire to kick in and start cooking. It cooks
slower than my old propane stove but about as fast as an alcohol stove. This is
the first ever wood stove that is small and light and powerful enough to use as
an alternative for fossil fuel stoves.
The best part of this stove is its pack weight, it is lower than any other stove in the world. Even stoves that cost $100 or even more weigh more than the Trailstove when you include the weight of the fuel you need to bring. The Trailstove is the lightest to carry because you're simply not carrying any fuel.
