The next best thing to being out in the wilderness is checking out this website .

Bring all these things with you when you go backpacking.

A first aid kit in the back pack is well worth the weight it weighs. You never know when you might need it.

MEDICAL KIT

Being able to quickly and easily cut wood in case of an emergency is very important. Always bring a camp saw with you, they're great in non emergencies too to cut fire wood.

SAW

Rice is a perfect emergency food. Very light weight and full of energy. In an emergency you just need lots of energy, don't worry so much about vitamins. Bring about 3 cups of rice per person per day you think you will spend in worst case.

FOOD

You can do a lot of repairs with some steel wire.

STEELWIRE

You need to have a very good heavy duty knife. Bringing a Leatherman Tool or a Swiss Army Knife is fine but you have to bring a real knife as well.

TOOL

You've got to burn wood, not gas. I makes no sense to bring gas to the wilderness if there's no need for it. As far as I know the lightest wood stove there is, is the Stratus Trailstove.

BACKPACKING STOVE

MAKE A SHELTER

Find two 4 foot sturdy branches with "Y" shapes at the ends.

Find an 8 foot sturdy branch.

Pu the branches together into a pyramid with the longer branch towards the wind, make sure that they're securely joined, tie something around the top if you need to.

Line the two long walls with ribs consisting of branches resting against the long branch.

Cover the two long ribbed walls with smaller branches.

If you want to and you have plenty of time you can prepare the ground under the shelter ahead of time by digging down a few inches and burning a fire on the ground for a few hours and then covering the coals with the dirt from the dig. This way the ground in your shelter will be warm and dry all night long.
