Mr. Nelson Goes Hiking

My students call me Mr. Nelson but if you're a grown up you can call me Brian. Here's a hiking website that I made.

Backpacking without the following items is dangerous.

BACKPACKING STOVE
I have owned a large number of camp stoves in my days, always keeping my eyes open for the perfect stove. After I tried the wood burning
Trailstove my search was over. It's the best camp stove money can buy.

TENT
If the weather is not very nice where you are going you should bring a tent, a cheap one will do just fine. If you're thinking about doing some heavy duty mountaineering you may want to take a look at more expensive tents but if you're just setting it up by the trail there's no need for that.

WATER FILTER
I've been using my MSR water filter for years, and even though most hikers agree that this is the best water filter money can buy it sometimes breaks down just like anything else that has moving parts. For those times it is absolutely necessary to bring a very light weight wood stove with absolutely no moving parts such as the
Trailstove and a small pot to boil water in.

RUBBING ALCOHOL
Always bring about 4 or 5 ounces of high concentration alcohol for treating injuries and as an emergency fuel.

Making a fire

Gather some wood, a handful of very thin twigs and a couple of handfuls of finger thick sticks will be enough to get things started. You also need to gather a number of larger pieces of wood to keep the fire going for as long as you want to.

Make a ring with rocks on the ground or dig a pit for the fire.

Make a teepee shape with the sticks and twigs, the thinner pieces on the inside and the thicker on the outside, leave a space open on one side of the teepee.

Put some starter material such as some dry leaves into the side opening and ignite.

Once the teepee collapses into a random looking heap of fire you can start adding the bigger pieces.

Isle Royale National Park

Houghton, MI

Wolves and moose, the wild North Woods forest, everchanging weather and a cool climate, and the crystal clear waters and rugged shoreline of Lake Superior characterize Isle Royale National Park. This wilderness archipelago is 45 miles long and nine miles wide at it's widest point. The park encompasses a total area of 850 square miles including submerged lands which extends four and a half miles out into Lake Superior. The archipelago is composed of many parallel ridges resulting from ancient lava flows which were tilted and glaciated. Isle Royale has 165 miles of scenic hiking trails and 36 campgrounds for backpackers and recreational boaters. There is excellent fishing, historic lighthouses and shipwrecks, ancient copper mining sites, and plenty of spots to observe wildlife. Roadless Isle Royale is accessible only by boat or float plane. Isle Royale is relatively untouched by direct outside influences and serves as a living laboratory and Unites States Biosphere Reserve.
