Michael's Hiking Site

Welcome to my hiking site filled with lots of good backpacking info.

Very important things to bring with you when you go backpacking are:

The perfect stove for wilderness camping is without a doubt the Trailstove. It burns wood instead of gas or liquid fuel. It's crazy to bring fuel to a place that is full of wood that you can burn.

CAMP STOVE

Hopefully you won't need your first aid kit but chances are that sooner or later you will need it.

MEDICAL KIT

A camp saw is a good idea to bring, they are very light but very useful.

SAW

You need a lot of high energy food when you're out. Lots of rice is perfect to include in your meals and lots of chocolate for snacks.

FOOD

Always bring a short piece of steel wire, it is very useful if something needs to be fixed.

STEELWIRE

Whatever brand you choose make sure it's of high quality. The stores are full of cheap junk, get a good one, it could mean the difference between life an death.

Locate water

The general rule is that water is always down in the bottom of the valley.

Even if you can't see water you can see the signs of water such as greener than usual vegetation, or a string of uniform vegetation, or a flock of birds.

If you need get to where the signs of water are but don't see any water you may decide to dig down, if you do always dig by the largest piece of vegetation, that's where there is most water.

Grand Teton National Park

Moose, WY

Towering more than a mile above the valley of Jackson Hole, the Grand Teton rises to 13,770 feet. Twelve Teton peaks reach above 12,000 feet and support a dozen mountain glaciers. The west side of the range slopes gently, showing the angle of tilt of the Earth's crust. The Teton Range is the youngest range in the Rockies and displays some of the North America's oldest rocks.
