Some info here for you about paddling and canoeing.

Don't leave civilization without the following things.
| STRING | If you've ever gone on an over night canoeing trip and didn't bring string you probably ended up wishing you would have brought some string with you. String is very useful every time. | |
| COOKING POT | A light weight pot with a lid or some other type of similar water container is a quite important thing to bring to be able to boil water in case of an emergency. | |
| LIGHTWEIGHT STOVE | The only camp stove I would ever use is the Stratus Trailstove. It runs on wood that you pick up on site so you don't have to bring any fuel of any kind with you. It's absolutely fool proof, even if it gets smashed beyond recognition you can bend it back into shape and it'll work just fine. | |
| TENT | I don't know why people are so obsessed with tents. If you are going during a cold time of the year then it's good to have one but in the summer time there's no need for one. Just bring a small tarp that you can suspend over yourself in case it rains. | |
| MULTI PURPOSE TOOL | I don't go anywhere without my Leatherman tool, especially not into the great outdoors. | |
| FIRST AID KIT | It's good to have a first aid kit in case someone has some type of accident. | |
| FIRE TOOL | You need to be able to make fire. The easiest way is to bring some cheap disposable plastic cigarette lighters with you. Always bring a few for backup even though they rarely break, not even if they get wet. I usually bring three but I have never even had to use the backup lighters, but since they weigh practically nothing it's OK. |
Make emergency snowshoes
Making a pair of emergency snowshoes to get to safety is extremely simple. It's surprising how many people try to get to safety in knee deep snow and drop from exhaustion.
Find two stocky branches about 3 feet long with plenty of small branches and plenty of green, preferably from a fir tree but other trees will do if there are no firs in the area.
Tie one branch to each foot at the front end of the branch. Thread the string through something on the front of your boot otherwise your foot will slip out of the binding. Make sure your foot can swivel enough to walk, the snowshoe should drag on the snow slightly in the back.
That's it, you're ready to go!
